Liebe Fußballbegeisterte,
Der Ball steht still, dreht sich nicht mehr. Wir alle erleben in diesen Tagen und Wochen eine Situation, die es noch nie in dieser Form gab.
Zunächst hoffe ich, dass ihr und eure Familien gesund seid. Bleibt bitte zu Hause und passt auf euch auf.
An dieser Stelle möchte ich die Gelegenheit nutzen, mich bei allen Menschen zu bedanken, die derzeit alles geben, damit die Kranken gepflegt werden bzw. wieder gesund werden. Danke an alle, die in den Supermärkten etc. arbeiten und uns mit den lebensnotwendigen Dingen – vor allem Essen – versorgen. Danke an alle, die für die älteren Menschen unter uns einkaufen gehen. DANKE an alle, die in irgendeiner Weise sozial, gesellschaftlich und/oder medizinisch dazu beitragen, dass alle bestmöglich versorgt sind.
Wir Nicht-Ärztinnen und Nicht-Ärzte können uns nicht vorstellen, wie es ist, Entscheidungen zu treffen, die über alles, uns bislang Bekannte hinausgehen. Zu entscheiden, wer ein Beatmungsgerät erhält und wer nicht. Zu entscheiden, für wen weitergekämpft wird oder nicht. Weil Geräte fehlen. Am Limit gestanden zu sein und derart darüber hinausgegangen sein zu müssen bzw. darüber hinauszugehen. Ich kann an dieser Stelle nur schreiben: Ich wünsche euch allen, die im medizinischen und pflegenden Bereich arbeiten, viel Kraft und Stärke. Was ihr leistet, ist Wahnsinn. Wir bleiben für euch daheim. Und wo auch immer ihr gerade seid: YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE.
Nun muss ich das Thema wechseln. Das hier ist ein Fußballblog und ich habe wirklich sehr lange darüber nachgedacht, was ich als Erstes während der Coronakrise schreibe und ob ich währenddessen überhaupt etwas schreiben soll. Diese Zeit schockt uns alle.
Der Fußball war mir komplett unwichtig, als ich erfahren habe, was dieses Virus auf unserem Planeten gerade anrichtet. Die Gesundheit ist am Wichtigsten. Fußball kommt danach.
Was mir aufgefallen ist: Ohne Fußball komme ich natürlich mehrere Monate klar (in den Sommerpausen musste der Kick am Bolz etc. ja auch ausreichen). Was ich jedoch vermisse, sind die Menschen. Die Freunde, die ich durch diesen wunderbaren Sport gefunden habe. Das Zusammenkommen. Das Verbindende. Diese wunderbare Leidenschaft.
Ich habe überlegt, was ich hier schreiben könnte. An der Situation da draußen kann ich gerade wenig ändern. Ok, ich bleibe daheim. Wenn ich rausgehe, halte ich Abstand. Ich telefoniere öfter mit meiner Familie und meinen Freunden. Ich habe mich als Freiwillige zum Einkaufen und Telefonieren gemeldet. Ich habe einen kleinen Teil für den guten Zweck gespendet.
Doch was ändert es, wenn der Blog eine Pause macht? Nichts. Das Fußballbuch ist wieder weitergereist. Aktuell befindet es sich in Kalifornien. Vorher war es in Texas. Mit meinem Projektpartner in Texas habe ich Ende Februar noch telefoniert, als die Welt hier – zumindest für mich – noch in Ordnung zu sein schien…
Ich hatte eigentlich nur ein paar Fragen auf dem Plan. Doch es entwickelte sich ein – wie ich empfinde – wunderbares Gespräch. Ein sehr umfangreiches Interview mit vielen tollen Eindrücken seiner Lebensgeschichte. Es hat etwas gedauert, bis ich es „abgetippt“ habe, weil mich Corona doch wirklich teils in eine Art Schockstarre gebracht hat, und ich es als so surreal empfand, jetzt an Fußball zu denken, wo es doch so viel Wichtigeres gab. Doch in den vergangenen Tagen änderte sich meine Meinung. Die Welt dreht sich weiter, wir sind hier. Wir sollten versuchen optimistisch nach vorne zu blicken, so schwer das im Moment auch fällt. Wir brauchen meines Erachtens Dinge, die uns motivieren, die uns ein bisschen „ablenken“. Die uns Mut, Hoffnung, Zuversicht und Kraft schenken. Die dafür sorgen, dass wir unsere soziale Isolation einfach mal vergessen und uns in eine Art Parallelwelt reisen lassen.
Das Interview, das ich mit Michael Lahoud führen durfte, hat mir neue Perspektiven aufgezeigt. Es war eine starke Bereicherung für mich. Ich saß nun daheim und habe es „abgetippt“. Saß mehrere Stunden am PC und habe die Zeit völlig vergessen (auch das Abendessen wurde deshalb um ca. vier Stunden verschoben…). Ich habe geweint, weil es so viele bewegende Stellen gab. Auf die ich jetzt – auf Grund des Virus – noch einmal mehr eine andere Sichtweise habe.
Wie ihr wisst reist das Fußballbuch nun seit knapp zwei Jahren um die Welt. Es ist ein langfristiges Projekt und für gute Zwecke gedacht. Und genau deshalb finde ich es wichtig – gerade auch in dieser Zeit – über seine spannende Reise zu berichten.
Wir können so viel voneinander lernen. Und ich hoffe, dass wir diese aktuelle Krise auch als Chance begreifen, um wieder mehr aufeinander zuzugehen. Dass wir nach Corona wieder mehr miteinander reden anstatt in den „sozialen Medien“ zu schreiben. Dass wir uns öfter REAL treffen, hier gemeinsam Dinge erleben, die uns beeinflussen, als mit irgendwelchen gestellten Dauerlächelfotos bei Dauersonnenschein allzu perfekt zu influencen. Dass wir wieder mehr wir selbst sind. Dass wir respektvoll und rücksichtsvoll miteinander umgehen. Dass wir uns an unseren Ursprung zurückerinnern. Dass wir kleine Fehler akzeptieren, weil wir Menschen sind. Dass wir Menschen anderer Kulturen schätzen und ermöglichen unser Leben durch sie zu bereichern anstatt sie in Schubladen schieben. Dass wir mehr auf UNSERE GEMEINSAMKEITEN schauen anstatt auf unsere Unterschiede. Dass wir wieder mehr einen Blick für das bekommen, was WIRKLICH WICHTIG ist.
Auf den Fußball übertragen – wer mich kennt weiß, dass ich das schon seit Jahren sage… – bedeutet das beispielsweise auch:
– RESPEKT VORM GEGNER. Ohne ihn gibt’s kein Spiel, da könnt ihr machen, was ihr wollt.
– RESPEKT VOR DER/DEM SCHIEDSRICHTER*IN. Auch ohne ihr/ihn kann kein Spiel stattfinden. Oder wollt ihr diesen Job machen (ich hab einmal gepfiffen und das hat mir gereicht…)?
– OHNE FANS UND EHRENAMTLICHE LÄUFT NIX. Das ist wohl hoffentlich auch endlich den Letzten klar… Falls nicht: Ja, jetzt geht es derzeit in den oberen Ligen um die noch ausstehenden TV-Gelder. Warum aber gibt es Sky? Warum gibt es Sponsoren? Weil sie berichten. Weil sie Werbung für sich machen wollen. WARUM? Weil die FANS Interesse am Fußball haben. LETZTENDLICH BEGINNT DIE KETTE IMMER BEI DEN FANS. OHNE FANS KEIN PROFIFUßBALL (oder was habt ihr bislang von den Geisterspielen gehalten @Spieler, die Geisterspiele gespielt haben? Wo war die Stimmung, hm? Gab es da überhaupt eine „Atmosphäre“? Ich behaupte NEIN.). WARUM haben die Profis ihr Geld auf dem Konto? WEIL es FANS gibt. Würde sich niemand für Fußball interessieren, gäbe es keine Fußballsender. Ganz einfach.
(Wenn man die Kette vereinfacht formuliert, dann sieht das so aus:
Fans zahlen Geld an Sender -> Sender zahlt Geld an Clubs -> Clubs überweisen Geld an Spieler. Oder: Fans kaufen Produkte, da Werbung im Stadion -> Fans zahlen Geld an Sponsoren/Werbepartner -> Sponsoren/Werbepartner zahlen Geld an Clubs -> Clubs überweisen Geld an Profis. Verstanden?)
Vielleicht denkt der/die eine mal darüber nach, die/der es bislang noch nicht getan hat. JETZT wäre der richtige Zeitpunkt dafür!
P.S.: Reinigungskräften, Platzwarten und Ehrenamtlichen darf man auch mal DANKE sagen.
P.P.S.: Würde ein Profi ein Spielfeld betreten, wenn die Toiletten dreckig wären? Würde ein VIP-Gast nochmal zu einem Spiel kommen, wenn es auf den Toiletten stets derbe riecht? Welcher Profi nimmt sich seine Klamotten nach dem Spiel mit nach Hause und wäscht sie und putzt sich stets selbst die Fußballschuhe? Es ist keine Selbstverständlichkeit, dass immer alles blitzeblank auf euren Plätzen steht. Und es sollte eine EHRE für jeden Verein sein, Ehrenamtliche zu haben. Deshalb kümmert euch gut um sie (ich habe 2015 mit meinem Ehrenamt in einem „Profi“fußballclub aufgehört und ich hatte meine Gründe), schätzt sie, denn sie schenken euch ihre ZEIT und Gesundheit und Zeit sind das Wichtigste, das wir haben…
Nun wünsche ich euch viel Kraft für die kommenden Wochen und Monate, dass euch dieser Text ein paar Gedankenansätze geliefert hat und freue mich euch mitteilen zu dürfen, dass das Interview mit Michael Lahoud heute um 23:55 Uhr MESZ online gehen wird… Seid gespannt – mir hat es sehr viel Spaß gemacht und es war eine große Bereicherung für mich mit ihm zusammenarbeiten zu dürfen.

You’ll never walk alone. Time to say ‘THANK YOU’.
Dear football fans,
The ball is stopped; it doesn’t roll anymore. In these days and weeks, we are all experiencing a situation that we’ve never been seen before.
First off, I hope that you and your families are healthy and safe. Please stay at home and take care of yourselves.
At this point I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the people who are currently doing everything possible to ensure that the sick are cared for and are doing everything they can to get them well again. Thank you to all those who work in the supermarkets, in the fields, delivery services, etc., and provide us with the necessities of life, especially food. Thanks to all those who go shopping for the elderly people among us. THANK YOU to all those who contribute in any way socially, and/or medically, to ensure that everyone is provided for in the best possible way.
We, non-medical personnel, cannot imagine what it is like to make decisions that go beyond anything we have ever known; to decide who gets a respirator and who does not; to decide for whom we will continue to fight or not, because we lack proper equipment. To have been at the limit, and to have had to go beyond it. I can only write: I wish you all, who work in the medical field, much STRENGTH and POWER. What you achieve is madness. We stay at home for you. And wherever you are: YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE.
Now, to drastically change the topic. This is a football blog and I’ve been thinking for a really long time about what to write first during the Coronavirus pandemic and whether I should write anything at all during that time. This time shocks us all.
Football was completely unimportant to me when I learned what this virus is doing to our planet right now. Health is the most important thing. Football comes second.
What I noticed: I can manage without football for several months (during the summer breaks, the kick on the ball, etc., had to be enough). But what I miss were the people. The friends I made through this wonderful sport, the coming together, the connection. This wonderful passion.
I thought about what I could write. There’s little I can do about the situation out there right now. Okay, I’ll stay home. When I go out, I’ll keep my distance. I talk to my family and friends on the phone more often. I’ve volunteered to do some shopping at the supermarket and phone calls. I’ve donated a small portion to charity.
But what does it change when the blog takes a break? Nothing. The football book has travelled on again. It is currently in California. Before that it was in Texas. With my project partner in Texas, I was still on the phone at the end of February, when the world here – at least for me – seemed to be okay…
I actually just had a few questions on the schedule. But it turned out to be – I feel – a wonderful conversation. A very extensive interview with many great impressions of his life story. It took me some time to ‘type it in’, because the pandemic really put me in a kind of shocked state at times, and I found it so surreal to think about football, when there were so many more important things. But in the last days my opinion changed. The world keeps on turning, and yet we are here. We should try to look ahead optimistically, as difficult as it is at the moment. I think we need things that motivate us, that distract us a little; things that give us courage, hope, confidence and strength. That ensure that we simply forget our social isolation and allow ourselves to travel to a kind of parallel world.
As you know, the soccer book has been traveling around the world for more than two years now. It is a long-term project and it is meant for good causes. And that is exactly why I think it is important – especially during this time – to report about its exciting journey. The interview I was allowed to conduct with Michael Lahoud showed me new perspectives. It was a great enrichment for me. I was sitting at home and typed it up. I sat at the computer for several hours and completely forgot the time (also the dinner was therefore postponed by about four hours…) I cried because there were so many moving parts. On which I now – due to the virus – have a different view again.
We can learn so much from each other. And I hope that we also see this current crisis as an opportunity to get closer to each other again. That after the pandemic, we will talk to each other more again instead of on social media. That we will meet each other in PERSON more often, experience things together that influence us, rather than influencing us too perfectly with posed permanent smile photos. That we will treat each other with respect and consideration. That we remember our origins. That we accept small mistakes because we are human. That we appreciate people from other cultures and make it possible to enrich our lives through them instead of pigeonholing them. That we look more at OUR COMMONSHIPS instead of our differences. That we get more of an eye for what is REALLY IMPORTANT.
Transferred to football – anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been saying this for years… – this also means, for example:
– RESPECT FOR THE OPPONENT. Without an opposing team there is no game, you can do what you want.
– RESPECT FOR THE REFEREE. Even without him/her there can be no game. Or do you want to do their job (I whistled once and that was enough for me…)?
– WITHOUT FANS AND VOLUNTEERS NOTHING WORKS. Hopefully the last ones will finally realize this… If not: Yes, now the premier leagues are talking about the outstanding TV money. But why does ‘Sky’ etc. exist? Why are there sponsors? Because they report. Because they want to promote themselves. WHY? Because the FANS are interested in football. IN THE END, THE CHAIN ALWAYS STARTS WITH THE FANS. No professional football without fans (or what did you think of the ghost games @players who played ghost games? Where was the mood, huh? Was there even an ‘atmosphere’ there? I say NO). WHY did the pros have their money in the account? BECAUSE there are FANS. If nobody was interested in football, there would be no football channels. It’s simple.
(If you put the chain in simple terms, it looks like this:
Fans pay money to TV broadcasters -> TV broadcasters pay money to clubs -> clubs transfer money to players. Or: Fans buy products because advertising in the stadium -> Fans pay money to sponsors/advertising partners -> Sponsors/advertising partners pay money to clubs -> Clubs transfer money to professionals. You got that?)
Maybe the one who hasn’t done it so far will think about it. NOW would be the right time for it!
P.S.: You can also say THANK YOU to housekeepers, groundskeepers and volunteers.
P.P.S.: Would a professional enter a playing field if the toilets were dirty? Would a VIP guest come back to a game if the toilets always smelled rough? What professional would take his clothes home after a game and wash them and always clean his own football shoes? It is not a matter of course that everything is always spick and span in your seats. And it should be an honour for every club to have volunteers. Take good care of them (I stopped volunteering in a professional football club in 2015 and I had my reasons), appreciate them, because they give you their TIME and health and time are the most important things we have…
Now I wish you a lot of strength for the coming weeks and months, that this short text has given you some ideas and I am happy to inform you that the interview with Michael Lahoud will go online today at 11:55 p.m. CEST… Be curious – I had a lot of fun and it was a great enrichment for me to work with him.
